たもと【袂】

1 〔和服の〕 a sleeve; the pocket of a sleeve.

●着物のたもと a sleeve of a kimono.

●たもとに入れる put sth in one's kimono sleeve

・そっと自分のたもとに隠す slip sth up [into] one's sleeve.

2 〔山の〕 the foot [base] 《of a mountain》. [＝ふもと]

3 〔橋の〕 the foot 《of a bridge》; the approach 《to a bridge》.

●橋のたもとで at the foot of a bridge; near the approach to a bridge.

袂を絞る wring the tears out of one's sleeves; shed copious tears for sb [sth]; shed (a flood of) tears.

袂を連ねる do things in unison with others.

●たもとを連ねて職場を去る resign [leave a workplace] in a body [en masse].

袂を分かつ part from sb; part company; split with sb; bid sb farewell; take leave of sb.

●永久にたもとを分かつ leave 《each other》 for good [forever]

・この演出はこれまでの演劇の伝統とはっきりたもとを分かつものだ. This style of production is a sharp departure from previous dramatic tradition.
